The right to protest is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society. Every citizen has the right to raise their voice against the government, public institutions, or any cause they believe in. However, there is one line that should never be crossed: targeting the symbols and diplomatic representations of friendly nations.
The incident in which the flag of an embassy was tampered with cannot be dismissed as an ordinary episode. It raises serious questions and calls for a thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities, especially at a time when concerns are increasingly being raised about the possible involvement of hostile foreign actors seeking to destabilize the country. What connection do foreign embassies have to a domestic protest in Albania? Who are the individuals attempting to shift the focus of the protest away from Albanian institutions and toward diplomatic missions?
Under international law, embassies and national flags enjoy special protection and status. History has shown that even during the most difficult periods, including times of war, diplomatic missions and their flags are respected because they represent channels of dialogue and peace between nations.
It is therefore legitimate to ask: why would anyone seek to drag Albania into tensions with other countries? Who benefits from such an act? Albania has built strong relationships with its partners and allies and has no interest in creating unnecessary diplomatic conflicts.
It would also be wrong to generalize about the protesters. It cannot be assumed that everyone shares the same intentions. Whether these acts were committed by 10, 50, or 500 individuals, the fact remains that such an incident is serious and deserves to be fully investigated.
The State Police has the responsibility to identify those responsible, clarify the circumstances, and keep the public informed. Transparency is essential to determine whether this was the work of isolated individuals, provocateurs, or organized groups seeking to incite division and hostility between nations.
Albania must not allow its protests to be exploited as a tool to undermine its relationships with friendly countries. Protest is part of democracy. Attacking diplomatic symbols is not.
Respect for flags and embassies is not merely a matter of diplomatic protocol. It is a matter of respect for the state, for international relations, and ultimately for Albania’s own national interest.
